Day 259 of Code: Getting Back on Track
It’s hard to believe it’s been 106 days since my last blog post on Day 153. I know, I know – it’s a long time to go without updating my progress. But to be honest, it’s tough to balance learning to code with writing about it. Sometimes, one has to take priority over the other, and unfortunately, my blogging habit took a backseat. However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been coding. In fact, I’ve…

i want the sirens to look weirderrrr
#my art#tron uprising#tronblr#theres not really info on the sirens as a group except women that just kind of show up for eye candy. Well not on my watch!#im thinking of them as a group that like. worship the grid as opposed to the users. which ties into Something else i was designing#they do also just spring out of the walls to play dress up on you though. for fun.#theyre not all women and in fact arent really women at all but they take on a feminine presentation and she/her pronouns#also yes thats gem. now that i think abt it i wish id given her a hair piece but whatever i dont wanna look at this anymore#thats also the siren that held up the disc at the race!#interestingly based on some concept art she was the original design for lux. and cutler was the original design for bartik#also ada had short hair </3 maybe she made her hair long when she had to go on the run...#ANYWAY as far as my design process. looked at a lot of thierry mugler#and i wanted to give them shapes/fabrics that arent typical w other programs eg the floaty organza and the fringe#the fringe btw i have an image in my head of it flying around as the lightcycles go past her. for dramatic effect#also the one w the helmet that kinda looks like teslers doesnt mean anything it was a complete accident ffhkegkgj

i know that uhura’s role in tos was written to be like a radioman (the guy in wwii movies who carries the phone on his back sometimes) meaning that the “communications officer” role evolved from radioman to linguist in the time since tos aired. but that makes uhura in tos really interesting with a retrospective read of her character, applying things novels and later iterations of her have fleshed out, because she doesn’t do any visible linguistic work in any tos episode. she does security and navigation and piloting and engineering which sort of makes her seem like a valuably flexible sort of many-skilled officer.
it was probably both enterprise with hoshi and the 2009 movie that really cemented the idea of “communications officer means linguist or at the very least polyglot” instead of it just being an uhura-quirk. uhura in the 2009 movie does a lot of engineering/operating work of comm equipment and is implied to speak a lot of languages on top of be able to interpret subspace “noise,” so to speak (like, there’s no way it’s radio. it can’t be radio. star trek takes place across distances of lightyears—when they say “signal,” i’m assuming it’s not radio). and of course strange new worlds has run with the linguistics angle and made it even more explicit that yes she studies linguistics, linguistics is a core part of starfleet academic infrastructure, to the point where whole episode plots are written around the act of translation.
the retrospective addition of this expertise to uhura makes what she is in tos a character even more focused on leadership and, idk, becoming something like a captain, because she doesn’t seem all that specialized. she’s more of a kirk-like character, or janeway or sisko, characters that have a specialized skill but have set it aside mostly to pursue some sort of command. obviously this wasn’t the intention of her character. writers of uhura have mostly just stumbled on the idea of her as a polyglot (according to wikipedia, first introduced in the novel uhura’s song, so) and been like “neat idea! makes sense! explorers need to learn languages!” and kept doubling down on that idea until we get to an origin-story uhura in snw that (wildly) speaks 37 languages, for whatever definition of speak or language, i guess.
what all this overthinking on my part has generated is this idea of uhura very much like a futuristic-captain aubrey or a captain sisko not nailed down to one station, hanging off the shrouds of a solar-sail ship’s rigging, looking beyond, in the most romantic and idealized version of an explorer. i think a lot of people read/write female characters as being more down-to-earth than the whimsical leader-on-the-sea or more nurturing than than the hardened captain-of-a-ship, partly why janeway and burnham are so wonderful to me. but it’s fun to imagine tos uhura being the exploring-captain archetype, amongst the political structures of the 60s. like the additions to her character over the years have solidified that romantic adventurer portrait of her in tos, when the idea of her in command would be the least welcome.
and the fact that she was shown to be excited about a solar sailing ship in snw, like sisko was in ds9 for that one episode, i think emphasizes this read of her—and that her character-journey in snw is going to be how she goes from bookish linguist to “hanging-on-a-shroud-on-a-sunsail-ship” looking out to “sea”.
#i also think this all somewhat contributes to star trek’s efforts towards decolonizing the concept of exploration#to the extent that any star trek writer has thought of it.#in combo with sisko sun-sailing while proving a colonized people were more advanced in tech than assumed#and michael burnham slowly self-actualizing and figuring out who she is outside of the culture she was raised in while becoming captain#and now uhura in snw changing in some way how we view this very old character. updating her role in ways that affect how she’s read in tos#i don’t think there’s a deliberate concern with “decolonizing the ideas of science and exploration”#but i also think the efforts to diversify the star trek property inevitably lead to some aesthetic and poetic argument to that end#however small that end might be in a larger scheme#but in an intertextual sort of way: nichols was hired by nasa to recruit women and people of color into the space program#so you know. it’s all Significant#star trek#uhura#tos#aos#strange new worlds#snw#ds9#sisko

@aroace-get-out-of-my-face @thefallenangel2008 @ravmycupine
just wanted to add some thoughts to the memory vial/brain dead au (or whatever we're calling it)
because of course ford's guilt about using the memory gun on stan is so much worse than it is in canon, not just for the obvious reasons but also because like
this wasn't the plan
Stan agreed to have his memories erased—of course he did, the whole thing was his idea. But he didn't know he was going to die. Granted, I feel like Stan probably still would've been willing to make that sacrifice if he had known that. But I don't think Ford would've.
Ford just thought he was turning his brother into an amnesiac, and even then he almost couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger. And of course he knew it was going to hurt, having Stan look at him like he's a stranger, but at least that's the outcome he was preparing himself for.
He was not prepared to see Stan's body topple over on its side, his unblinking eyes staring blankly ahead. Ford rushes to his brother's aid, grabbing him by the shoulders, trying to rouse him, calling his name (except, he wouldn't know his own name anymore, would he?). Stan's not moving. He's not breathing. Oh God, he's not breathing. Ford glances at the memory gun on the ground next to them, and horror washes over him as he realizes what he's done. The gun erased more than just memories, it erased everything. Stan's brain was a floppy drive and Ford was the magnet, wiping it clean and leaving it broken beyond repair.
No, no, this wasn't the plan. Time to call off the con. This wasn't supposed to happen. Stop, cut, abort mission, abort mission!
But it's too late. What's done is done, and he can't take it back.
Oh God, I killed him.
Sobbing now, Ford mutters choked-out apologies, first to Stan's body as he holds him tight—and again at his grave after he's buried. And the apologies start up anew every time he visits.
As the years go on, Ford is haunted by all the what-ifs that might've saved his brother's life. What if he had thought to type "Stanley Pines memories" into the memory gun instead of just "Stanley Pines", would it have kept his essential brain functions intact? Hell, what if he typed in "Bill Cipher"? Would that have been enough to kill the bastard and still let Stanley keep most of his memories and, more importantly, his life?
Ford doesn't know the answer to that question. And he'll never know. Because as much as he longs for it, he'll never have that chance to go back and do it differently.
#gravity falls#stangst#hiiii :3#memory gun au#brain dead au#side note i do wonder a lot about the semantics of the memory gun#it bugs me a little bit in the society of the blind eye episode how ivan just typed in 'summer'#when he was getting ready to erase the memories of the mystery twins and friends#like i feel like that would've erased more than just that specific summer#hell would they have forgotten about the very CONCEPT of summer?#like ok the memory gun isn't a genie. it isn't going to spitefully twist your words to create an unexpected outcome#but also it's just a machine. and machines take their instructions literally#the machine doesn't know you're only concerned with their memories of this one summer IVAN#and then there are all those aus where ford uses the gun on stan#but stan doesn't forget the chunks of his life that he spent under an alias#cuz he typed in 'stanley pines'. not 8-ball alcatraz or any of the others#i just really wanna know more about how the prompt thing works#and if mcgucket thought to program in a character limit#or if you could just type the entire bee movie script into that thing#and what would happen if you did#what happens if you make a typo or a spelling mistake

While I love people’s own adaptations of what Agent Stone would look like as a character from the games, I feel some of them miss the mark whenever they have him looking too devious or sinister, or generally just as eccentric as Eggman.
Part of his appeal in his original appearance (imo) is the contrast of his completely professional demeanor to Robotnik’s eccentricity and over-the-top antics. It’s what makes it so good, mad scientist wanting to detonate a speedy blue rodent with missiles and lasers & his secretary that makes him coffee and always maintains his composure & professionalism despite the fact that his boss is crazy.
And yet he is utterly enthralled by Robotnik’s eccentricity, and is utterly loyal to a fault because of it. He’s an utter sycophant.
Like, I don’t think he would be maniacally laughing alongside Eggman. Because that supposes them as equals– they’re not, and he likes it that way. I think he’d be organizing Badnik patrols while Eggman focuses on larger schemes. Polishing up Metal Sonic’s paint job before sending him out on the doctor’s orders. Adjusting the volume levels while Eggman delivers his speeches to world leaders. And, of course, making him a a latte while he razes the land with a fleet of battleships and machines.
#he’d be similar to orbot and cubot. but rather than being programmed to serve eggman’s bidding#he just loves to do it. eggman having one organic being he actually trusts is a fascinating concept#and also just. competent and not comic relief#agent stone#doctor eggman#stobotnik#i guess???#i dont think this exactly counts but it talks about their relationship#so if someone wants to blacklist it there ya go#if someone wants me to remove the tag lmk

doodles regarding my tadc oc. sorry for falling back into the oc x canon mines 😔
i like to think that hassel befriends caine simply bc hes so fascinated and wants to know the inner workings of the circus and also just how advanced caine is as an AI. sure the friendship started out as one-sided and an attempt to get information n maybe to find an exploit of some sort but it soon becomes a real, genuine friendship.
gif unrelated

Gemini 8 - MMU Tether Procedures
"When astronaut David R. Scott, pilot of the Gemini 8 space flight, exits from the spacecraft he will be hooked to a 25-foot-long umbilical line by a 17-inch-long astronaut switchover tether (A). The switchover tether includes two hooking devices used alternatively to hook into rings provided in the tether line. During a night pass, Scott will move into the adapter section of the spacecraft and put on the Astronaut Maneuvering Unit back pack (B). On the following day pass, he will leave the adapter section, hooking in the first (15-foot) section of the 75-foot-long tether (C). Next, he will hook in two additional 30-foot-long sections (D-E-F) until he reaches the full 100-foot length of the tether and umbilical line. The GT-8 mission is scheduled for March 15 and will last almost three days."
